| I live in Hillsborough NC. I have been in contact with school board members about the All Kinds of Minds revolution. I suggested that are teachers and educators who are interested in attending the Schools Attuned program be allowed to and that we should find funding to help them. To my surprise, I learned NC is a big supporter of the Schools Attuned program. I also learned that a member of the school board is reading Mel Levine's book, as well as a school counselor and the pre-school coordinator. I also suggested that we start a discussion group for parents at our local school,a book club...I will let you know how well we progress. |

| We have just gotten approval to start a charter school in Indian River County, Florida, which will offer intensive programs for children grades 3-8 who've had have difficulty learning to read. We'll offer the Lindamood-Bell program, the Language! program, lots of hands-on project-based learning, small classes, and a lot of attention to metacognitive strategies. We're not officially an "All kinds of minds" school, but two of our founders have attended your workshops, and I think we've all been inspired by your work. By the way, is there some sort of directory we can get listed on? (River Charter School, 772 388-1453) |

| Hello! Myself, husband and son just returned from Raleigh seeing Dr. Levine on our annual f/uvisit. We are so blessed to have him on our team. I should have asked him this question, but forgot. I see All Kinds of Minds has an educator conference coming to my city, Columbia, SC in July. I have wanted a Schools Attuned program here since I heard about it 3 years ago, and this would be a golden opportunity for me to start advocating it, approaching your educator conference. My thoughts are to forward information to the school districts heads here to request their participation, but figure you already have vital contacts here or you wouldn't have planned the conference here. Please e-mail me or call me with advice. The conference location for Columbia, SC was not listed. I will do all I can to help get a charter program started here. I homeschool; we have a very organized hs group of families here with kids that "think outside of the box" and am sure I could garner support to get a school started here. Seems like the timing is now with your upcoming visit to our State. Our state is also in the throws of new legislation for families to get tax credits for private and homeschool families; Gov. Mark Sanford is in favor of it but many are not. The Put Parents in Charge Act has the support of the families mentioned above and hopefully will pass but my thinking is that Schools Attuned could garner support more easily in Columbia during this time as these issues are on the table. Families are tired of not getting their needs met in the SC education system. If Schools Attuned could get started here in the Public School System, that may satisfy both side's agendas. Please advise. E-Mail Kamerck@earthlink.net |

Indeed it is true. Our new two-day seminar, Educational Care for All Kinds of Minds is coming to Columbia, SC on July 13, 14, 2005.
Educational Care for All Kinds of Minds is a two-day professional development seminar lead by Dr. Mel Levine, (New York Times best-selling author of A Mind at a Time, Co-Founder of All Kinds of Minds®, and Director of the Center for Development and Learning at UNC/Chapel Hill). Together with members of All Kinds of Minds' National Faculty, Dr. Levine will talk with school leaders charged with guiding others in the best approaches to learning for all students.
To view the seminar agenda (for both Day 1 and Day 2), please visit http://www.allkindsofminds.org/educationalcare/agenda.aspx . Please notice that the seminar target audience include leaders in education, principles, superintends, and other public administrators.
The 2005 Introductory Rate for participation in Educational Care is $495. Sending a team from a school could be grant-funded. Visit www.allkindsofminds.org/educationalcare for general information pertaining to, and registration instructions for, Educational Care for All Kinds of Minds.
Please feel free to contact me at educationalcare@allkindsofminds.org if you have additional questions or require further assistance. I'll email you specifically regarding support in Columbia. We are currently in the final stages of negotiating conference location and will have it posted as soon as it is finalized.
Thank you for your interest and continued support.

Re: Schools for All Kinds of Minds Posted: 27 Mar 2005 08:48 PM |
This is basically an old post that is also relevant here. These are the things that I have done to collaborate with our school and to, I hope, help create a school for All Kinds of Minds:
1.Purchase Dr. Levine's books - A Mind at A Time, The Myth of Laziness, All Kinds of Minds, Educational Care - for your child's teachers and the school library.
2.Find out when Dr. Levine will be speaking in your area. Invite your child's teacher(s) and principal to attend with you.
3.Request Schools Attuned information and give it to the principal. If your school can't afford the training, find grants or corporate sponsorships to cover the costs.
4.Establish a parent-teacher partnership. Ask what you can do to help. Share with the teacher all of the things that you know that will help your child to learn better. If necessary, schedule regular progress meetings with the teacher. Document everything, both the positive and the negative.
Our school has participated in Schools Attuned for the last two years. Last year, fifth grade, my son was fortunate to have three Schools Attuned trained teachers. It was his best year ever. I wish he could have those same teachers for the rest of his life. |

Hello everyone,
This is a charter middle school in South Carolina and we need your help.
We are doing great things for our children and we can't allow them to revoke our charter. Please read and I'll be happy to attempt to answer your questions. As this is an ongoing investigation, I may not be able to answer them all.
Palmetto Charter School (PCS) provides an equitable educational experience for middle school students who are experiencing difficulty in their present school environment due to learning differences as a result of AD/HD. These students have demonstrated an inability to adjust and experience success academically, emotionally, and/or socially to their community school setting. Students exhibit documented academic problems as the result of AD/HD and learning differences. Palmetto Charter School is most appropriate for students with an average to above average ability.
Students at the Palmetto Charter School will benefit from a non-traditional education approach that incorporates an individualized learning plan, and regular family involvement. Students will benefit academically, behaviorally, and socially from a curriculum, that uses a variety of learning styles and methodology. The program will be designed so that all students will have an opportunity to achieve higher academic success.
PCS is currently in its first year of operation. The current board was elected from parents of the students and took over the governance of the school from the planning board in October 2004, more than two months into the school year. The administrator, office manager, and teaching staff were already in place at that time. As with any new business, the first year of operation is a continual learning experience, a period of ongoing adjustment even for the most knowledgeable.
On April 26, 2005, the Board of Directors of PCS received written notification from the Greenville County School District stating their intent to revoke the school’s charter.
PCS is a wonderful idea and is doing great things for our children. However, it has the potential to do so much more. PCS is filling a need that is not being supplied by the traditional public school setting. The children of Greenville County would truly suffer if we allow the Greenville County Trustees to close our school.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
The Board of Directors of Palmetto Charter School is seeking support from interested parties:
Write Letters of Support:
We would appreciate your letters of support. You may send them to the school, via postal mail or e-mail. You may also send letters to the Greenville County School Board as a whole and contact your district representative. Please send Palmetto Charter School a copy to be include in the package we will be preparing for the Greenville County School Board. Write letters to the editors.
Spread the Word:
Everyone knows someone with ADD/ADHD, or some type of learning disability. Certainly mental health professionals and educators will realize the importance of the progress PCS is making in the lives of our students. Many of them have already commented on the change in our kids. Community and business leaders will also appreciate the value of our school to the community.
Attend the Greenville County School Board Meetings:
We are asking to have an increase in our enrollment for 2005-2006 at the Meeting of the Board of Trustees at their May 10 meeting. We invite you to come with us to show your support.
Thank you for your support.

Retired now but designed a school in 1995 in Milwaukee that is documented in the book I co authored: "Quashing the Rhetoric of Reform"; WWW.rowmaneducation.com. I love the book "A Mind at a Time" and it confirms our thoughts. You can read the first chapter of our book on line at the Rowman website. Would like thoughts on how closely our design comes to opening doors for Dr. Levines way of thinking. Have waited so long to see children serviced in a school and process designed for them. How much is that to ask?
Keep up the good work, all.

| I am very interested to find out if this River Charter School was ever opened. I live in Miami but am looking at moving to that area of Florida and would love any information you could give me. I haven't found any School Attuned programs in Florida so far. If you know of any other schools or have advice for me I would greatly appreciate it. I've tried calling the phone number provided without any luck. |

I moved into the Maiden-Denver North Carolina area. Our school system is Lincoln County which is rated high. Are there any schools in the area that have this program? Our school Rock Springs does not. My child was tested for CAPD and that was positive. However, she has a very strong learning gap.Don't know how to help her. We are seeing a Clinical Neuropsychologist. Whould like to know if anyone else with the same problems lives in this area. What schools even if private can she get help from?

Re: Schools for All Kinds of Minds Posted: 12 Nov 2006 04:30 PM |
In Shelby County, TN, we have a tremendous problem, one that has been refused to be addressed by ANYONE. Even though Tennessee was featured in "Newsweek"along with a photo of Harold Ford, Jr. who was running for Senate, the focus was on his ethnicity, "change", the war in Iraq, and the possible turn over in the House and Senate to the Democratic Party.
Education of our children, the next generation of leaders, has been the lowest priority for years by the nation's leaders. Shelby County, which includes the City of Memphis, is structured this way. Memphis City schools are governed by their own Board of Education, City Council, and City Mayor. The "County" schools are governed by their own Board of Education, their own Mayor, and the funding structure was set back in the last century. If the county receives funds, it must then pay twice that amount to the city. For example, a million dollar high school was proposed to be built, but, it would cost three million to be built, as the taxpayers would have to pay the city two million.
I believe that because of the IDEA rules established to protect disabled children, funding was cut in the arts departments, and ALL children are being short-changed when it comes to learning via sensory input. This sensory input is critical in the early years to development of brain plasticity and academic achievement. For our schools (I live in the county), to bring in any model such as this, would be cost-prohibitive.
What is the answer? Repealing the funding structure has been attempted, but, why would the city let this source of funds go? The mayors have been re-elected, the Ford family is getting back in power, and the educational needs of our children have to be augmented by parents, who share the extra burden of contributing more financial support to the county public schools directly, that don't have to be matched and extended to the Memphis schools. Although we have 100 percent PTA participation, it is a requirement in order to get a directory, which is pitiful. Our teachers are all on the verge of retirement, and seem against new ideas. One psychologist even told me that "sensory integration has no scientific proof that it works." Of course not. Any attempt to prove it works would be unethical in humans; to deprive them of sensory input would be to stem the growth of the mind. Any evidence it did work would be anecdotal in nature, and the possibilities are endless.
I believe the answer is to begin educating new parents at the level of the maternity floor! They need to learn on how to incorporate multi-sensory stimulation into their new infant's environment. Sensory stimulation can overcome brain deficits, such as agenesis of the corpus callosum, such as my son has, by forming alternate connections. The corpus callosum is the billions of fibers that are formed into the fourth decade of life between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This intelligence is vitally important to create and maintain throughout adult life and one which this program addresses. I will gladly volunteer to spread the news about it. I already have written on this subject; see my URL, if you will list it: www.OmnibusWriting.com
Consider Shelby County's predicament. It is one major cities face, but one which is unique in this area of the country (or, at least one that I have not seen in 13 moves). Please spread the word. Thank you. |

We live in the Phila area, Valley Forge PA. My youngest son has only 3 years of high school left and we have all lost faith that his current school will prepare him for college. If anyone can direct us to a school in our area or on the east coast with a proven tack record in providing a true school for all kinds of minds, and or success with the schools attuned program, we would be extremely grateful and full supporters and advocates in anyway possible.
Thank you,
Marti |

Dear AKM Team:
I would like to congratulate you all for the good work you are doing with all the children with different kinds of learning skills! We are located in Guatemala City (Central America) and are very interested in getting involved in Schools attuned. We have read most of the books written by Dr. Levine and we really love his point of view as well as the strategies that he shares to handle these children.
In our country there is a lack of specialized schools to work with these kids.
Would it be possible to get in touch with you?
We will highly appreciate your prompt answer.
