Schools Attuned Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Department of
Education’s Collaborative Symposium on Learning… a Huge Success
Edmond, OK – On Friday, October 5th, more than 230 educators from across the
state of Oklahoma gathered at the University of Central Oklahoma to learn about
the science of learning in hopes of creating success for their students. The
focus of the day was on the Schools Attuned Program, a research-based program
for K-12 educators that helps them understand how students learn and how to
identify and manage learning breakdowns.
Educators gathered to hear All Kinds of Minds co-founder, renowned
pediatrician, author, and learning expert, Dr. Mel Levine present the
neurodevelopmental framework which the Schools Attuned Program is based on. In
addition to Dr. Levine, superintendents, teachers, and other educational
leaders shared strategies for reaching struggling students, links between the
Schools Attuned Program and other federal and state educational initiatives and
programs, as well as their success stories.
“The goal of the symposium was to bring together general and special education
teachers to promote deeper understanding of how the Schools Attuned program
enhances instruction delivery methods to include the knowledge of how people
learn, identifying educational strengths and weakness, and providing strategies
to meet the learning needs of all students. This symposium ignited renewed
interest and enthusiasm in teachers’ belief that all students not only can
learn…but will learn when teachers are equipped with tools to meet their
needs.” said Dr. Sheryl Flowers, State Coordinator for Schools Attuned
Oklahoma.
The Schools Attuned Program in Oklahoma is funded through the Oklahoma
Department of Education and the Oklahoma state legislature, who, in concert
with private and philanthropic sources, subsidize the $1500 per participant
cost for public school educators. Participants in the program learn about eight
neurodevelopmental constructs that affect learning. In addition to focusing on
how the brain is “wired”, the program examines various ways students learn,
patterns of students’ differences in learning, and how students passions and
strengths can be used to overcome weaknesses within the regular classroom. The
framework and tools provided in the Schools Attuned Program allows parents,
teachers, and children to work together to conquer student learning
differences.
