The Schools Attuned Program, Oklahoma is a state initiative funded by the Oklahoma Legislature through the Oklahoma Department of Education. Thanks to the commitment of these state and educational leaders, public schools in Oklahoma can train teams of teachers in this approach without incurring the $1500 per participant fee.
| |
> |
Oklahoma is the second state in the country to launch a statewide Schools Attuned Program initiative |
| |
> |
The Schools Attuned Program, Oklahoma is modeled after the nationally known Schools Attuned Program |
| |
> |
The program is adapted to meet the priorities of Oklahoma classrooms and schools.
Schools Attuned Program participants register for one of two “paths,” Generalist or Subject Specialist. The different paths are designed to address the areas of interest and expertise of educators and other related service professionals based on the grade levels and/or subject areas they teach. Both paths share the key features of the Schools Attuned Program and include pre-course work, a core instructional course, and follow-up experiences.
|
Participants participate in a Core Course consisting of 40 instructional hours over five days.
| |
> |
Participants learn about eight neurodevelopmental constructs that affect learning and come to understand the role of these constructs in forming the foundation for learning |
| |
> |
Participants learn a process of systematically observing and describing students’ strengths and weaknesses and using the information to develop a plan for managing these strengths and weaknesses in the classroom |
| |
> |
A portion of the course also analyzes the neurodevelopmental demands placed on students through the lessons taught in school |
| |
> |
The Core Course is facilitated by Oklahoma teachers who have used this approach in their classrooms
|
Following the completion of the Core Course, participants continue their professional growth by participating in a yearlong Practicum. Practicum is designed to deepen participant’s knowledge of neurodevelopmental constructs and functions and assist educators as they implement Schools Attuned in their classrooms and schools.
An added benefit for OK educators is the support of a full-time regional coordinator. These coordinators are former OK teachers who have experience using Schools Attuned in their classrooms. They are available to work with school teams and individual teachers as they implement Schools Attuned.
The focus is to build the capacity of schools to address the learning differences of their students by developing a team of school leaders. To accomplish this goal, schools participating in Schools Attuned in Oklahoma agree to send a team of at least four educators, including an administrator or faculty member in a leadership position in the school.
To participate, a school should commit to:
| |
> |
having a significant number of its teachers, administration, and support staff trained over a period of years
|
| |
> |
taking time to plan as a school team
|
| |
> |
making their best effort to incorporate the philosophy and practices of Schools Attuned throughout the school
|
To date, over 2,500 from across the state have been educated to recognize and manage learning differences.
Schools Attuned in Oklahoma is based in four regional course sites across the state: Northeast, Southeast, Central/South Central, West. Other delivery models are also available for school districts in outlying areas of the state. If your school is interested in participating in Schools Attuned or you would like more information about it, contact a Regional Coordinator. A staff member will contact you.
